Citrix Workspace You Must Be Logged On As An Administrator



This article is intended for Citrix administrators and technical teams only. Non-admin users must contact their company’s Help Desk/IT support team and can refer to CTX297149 for more information. Intermittently application launch fails with errors 'Cannot start' or 'Cannot start app'. As a non-admin user of Citrix Workspace app, you must contact your company’s Help Desk or IT Support since they manage the Citrix resources accessible by Citrix Workspace app. The following are the most common questions we receive from non-admin users with a brief explanation for why your company’s Help Desk/IT Support team is the fastest.

  • According to the Administrators Guide there now is a Workspace mode. This mode enables displaying the Citrix Storefront page to start the applications. Eventhough I’ve selected this options it doesn’t display this mode but uses the Classic mode. I can’t find any other options to configure according to the guide.

    Has anyone else tried this option so far?

    We have the workspace mode working, but I have found an error that might explain your experience.

    If you select “Reset the system setting to factory default” when restarting or shutting down, it will not use workspace mode again.

    Only workaround I found to get it back was downgrading to Thinos 9.0, and then upgrading again. Quite annoying..

    The solution is setting “User Experience” > “System mode” to Classic (default is modern)

    Workspace mode does not work in modern.

This vulnerability affects the following supported versions of Citrix Workspace app for Windows:

  • Citrix Workspace app 2002, 2006 and 2006.1 for Windows
  • Citrix Workspace app 1912 LTSR for Windows (before CU1 Hotfix 1)

Note that this vulnerability was originally reported against a subset of the versions above. However, further investigation has discovered potential variant forms of this attack and the affected versions have been amended accordingly.

This vulnerability does not affect Citrix Workspace app on any other platforms or any supported versions of Citrix Receiver.

Mitigating Factors

This vulnerability only exists if Citrix Workspace app was installed using an account with local or domain administrator privileges. It does not exist when a standard Windows user installed Citrix Workspace app for Windows.

A remote compromise is only possible when the user has enabled Windows file sharing (SMB) and only when the updater service is running. If authentication is required for SMB then an attacker must be able to authenticate before they could exploit this issue.

Users with automatic updates enabled and applied should have already been updated to a fixed version.

What Customers Should Do

The issue has been addressed in the following versions of Citrix Workspace app for Windows:

  • Citrix Workspace App 2008 or later
  • Citrix Workspace App 1912 LTSR CU1 Hotfix 1 (19.12.1001) and later cumulative updates
